A gift from the gods.

The indigenous tattoo culture of Samoa has roots that date back literally thousands of years. Legend tells of Siamese twin sisters Taema and Tilafaiga who swam from Fiji to Samoa with tatau, which was traditionally considered a gift from the gods. At first it was only the women who received a malu (female tatau) until the legend switched around so men received pe’a (male tatau). Historically tribal tattoo culture was very prominent across the whole Philippines until European influence took over and it all but disappeared. Samoa was the only Polynesian nation to keep the culture alive, tatau being seen as an emblem of pride representing a right of passage into adulthood for Samoan people. Thus tatau survived the ages.

These days two families, the Sa Su’a and Sa Tulouena make up the official tattooing guild to which all tatau practitioners belong. When Tomasi was officially adopted by his future dad Sua Sulu’ape Petelo in Australia, he became a member of the Sa Su’a family and thus the guild. His dads brother, a tufuga (master tattooist) took Tomasi under his wing, introducing him to the traditional Samoan art of tatau. Armed only with his artistic talent and some basic tattoo knowledge, Tomasi started to learn the tradition ways.

Today he is in high demand as the only official Sua trained Sulu’ape tatau artist based in Europe. He keeps the traditions and the family name alive through his tattoo. Each piece, whether machine or traditional is a completely unique, custom work of art with an unmistakable style.
